BJP to light up arc lamps on corruption in NE

New Delhi, Feb 12: Alleging that the North Eastern states were executing a systematic loot of the exchequer, siphoning off funds worth crores of rupees for themselves and their family members, BJP today demanded probe by a central investigative agency against them.

Party president Nitin Gadkari today released two booklets 'Congress Governments Loot of North East'and Hydro Power Scam, Arunachal - North East,' along with related documents and annextures prepared by the three-member Fact Finding Committee headed by former Union Minister Bijoya Charavarty.

''The North-Eastern states may be poor and underdeveloped in every sense, compared to the rest of the country, but the political leadership in the region is not very far behind in looting the exchequer and siphoning off funds worth crores of rupees for themselves and their family members,'' Gadkari further alleged.

The Congress has allowed its leaders and allies to loot in the 2G spectrum allocation, Commonwealth Games, IPL, but the kickbacks in the hydro power scam if worked out together in the North East, would be worth Rs 63,000 crore, the BJP president asserted.

Gadkari also alleged that Congress workers had manipulated the PDS in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and other states, causing a loss of Rs 3,000 crore to the exchequer. More than 50 per cent of the rice meant for BPL people was misappropriated.

Detailing the report, BJP Secretary and former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya said the hydropower MoUs signed by the NE governments in the region would surpass Rs 400,000 crore and most of them were given permission to build hydropower facilities to the companies least qualified for the project. Even in a small state like Nagaland, the level is alarming, while it is very high in the states of Meghalaya and Sikkim and high in Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. The scale is moderate in the states of Tripura and Mizoram, he said.

If this was the state of things in Assam, a state the PM represented in Parliament, one would have to think about the level of corruption and governance under the UPA II in the country, he added.

A tour operating company which was operating in a slum had got permission to build a Rs 2,000 crore project. The irony was that this company did not even have enough people to show on the Company Board and as a result, even the peon was on the Board of Directors, Somaiya alleged.

The BJP had sought special courts and coordinated investigation by the National Investigation Agency, CBI and CVC to speed up the judiciary process and punish scamsters, he added. UNI
